Mary Elizabeth Tolman was only a year old when she moved from Tooele to Marion with her parents, Cyrus Ammon Tolman and Maria Louisa Pickett in 1881. She lived with them until about 1890, when the President Wilford Woodruff issued the Manifesto that ended the practice of plural marriage. With the Manifesto, Cyrus Ammon and Maria Louisa had to separate. Mary Elizabeth lived with her mother in Marion and her mother Maria was a Sunday School teacher in the Marion ward. She lived within walking distance of her grandparents, Cyrus and Alice, and other relatives.
