Remnants of the homestead where Margaret Eliza Utley (Cyrus Tolman’s third wife) and her children loved are still there to be seen for those who don’t mind a little adventure. The dugout location is found by driving south on SR 36 through Stockton, past Penny’s restaurant to the turnoff to Ophir. Take the turn off and drive approximately 4 miles, and at the bottom of the hill there are several turn off spots on the right side of the road. Either part at one of these spots or continue on until there is a dirt road turnoff on the right that leads to a locked gate. Climb over the gate (permission is needed from the owner) and follow the road as it curves to the northwest. When it ends, you must cross the stream, and on the other side of the trees, just to the north of two huge cement pipes, is the chimney and parts of another brick wall and a wooden side of the dugout. It was out of this desolate spot that Margaret Eliza’s sons kept horses and used them as teams to haul to and from the mines to the east.
